spread the love: heart pattern friendship bracelets
06.21.2011 § 109 Comments

Growing up, I spent countless hours making colorful friendship bracelets. Their resurgence prompted me to rediscover this summer pastime. Here are instructions for one of my favorite patterns – hearts!
You will need embroidery thread in two colors. Measure the thread using twice the length of your arm (from your fingertips to your shoulder and then back to your fingertips) for each string. Cut it. Do this two times for each color, fold them in half and knot them to form a loop. You should have a total of eight strings to work with, four of each color. Secure the loop using a clipboard or a safety pin attached to a pillow, your jeans… whatever works as long as it is held tightly and securely.
The basics:

Hold the second string with your left hand as you use your right hand to take the first string over and then under the second string. Pull the first string through so that it forms a 90-degree angle as you guide it away from you, towards the knot holding together the bracelet. Do this two times to make each knot. Hold on to that first string with your right hand! For the next knot going right, repeat these steps holding the third string in your left hand. Keep working with the first string as you work your way to the middle – for this pattern you will need to make three knots across in each direction. After three knots, make another knot to join the first and eighth strings in the middle.

Hold the seventh string with your right hand as you use your left hand to take the eighth string over and then under the seventh string. Pull the first string through so that it forms a 90-degree angle as you guide it away from you, towards the knot holding together the bracelet. Do this two times to make each knot. Hold on to that first string with your left hand! For the next knot going left, repeat these steps holding the sixth string in your right hand. Keep working with the eighth string as you work your way to the middle – for this pattern you will need to make three knots across in each direction. After three knots, make another knot to join the first and eighth strings in the middle.
The pattern:
1: Lay your strings out as shown. The color of the first and eighth thread will be the color of the heart shape.
2: Make your first row by following the instructions for making a row of knots going right and then left. Remember to join the two threads you were knotting with in the middle.
3: Make a second row of knots in the same way, this time with the second color.
4: Take the second string and knot it around the first string going left. Then, take the seventh string and knot it around the eighth string going right.
5: Fill in the space between the knots you made in step 4 with the first color by knotting the second string around the third and fourth strings going right and then the seventh string around the sixth and fifth strings going left. Join them in the middle. This step forms the top of the heart.
6: Take the second string and knot it around the first string going left. Knot the seventh string around the eighth going right. This step forms the outermost points of the heart.
7: Fill in the heart with the second color by making two knots to the right with the second string and two knots to the left with the seventh string. Join them in the middle.
8: To form the bottom of the heart, take the first string and knot it around the second and third strings going right. Next, take the eighth string and knot it around the seventh and sixth strings going left. Join the first and eighth strings in the middle.
9: Keep repeating these steps until you’ve made a bracelet. Have fun!
This is so lovely! Thanks for sharing
It is gorgeous and easy.
Thank you, that video is very helpful.
this is so hard to understand. any easier instructions?
you’re so right
This is SO cute! To complicated for me though… -_-’ Must try!
I have not tried it myself, however my daughter was working this like an “old pro” the year before she graduated and she is not really very crafty. I think you would surprise yourself if you try and you may want to ask a younger girl that is still in school, they seem to have this one down.
It is not hard after you do the first heart.
its beatiful though!!!!!!
this is so awesome thanks foro sharing, love it going to have to try it out soon

Cute! Looks/sounds pretty complicated! Wish me luck
Really, really cute. Love your color choice and the clean photos. Thanks!
cuteuseful& creativity!
Could you explain the knots a little clearer please? I understand how to make the knots, I’m just lost after the first string. I think I’m supposed to knot twice on each string until “the middle” and then knot 3times on the middle and then 2 again on the outer edges and then I’m not sure.
you always make two knots on each string, including the middle
think of making a four. go over the string you are tying a knot on (make it look like a 4) and go through the middle of the 4. then, repeat. the strings will then switch places, such as if you a tying the knot onto the second string from the first string, the second string will then be in first position and the first in second.

Needs video instructions. Very cute but I going to see if I can find a video on YouTube for it. Thanks!
I wanted to do some string bracelets, I’ll try this first! Thanks
I found THIS video on youtube…slightly different from the instructions above but fairly easy to follow:
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7hEpAIGvaY&w=420&h=315%5D
There are several videos which are helpful on the above site. There is one where she instructs knotting, etc. Very helpful to a beginner as I am. Love this for TV time at nights. <
I love making bracelets, have since I was a little girl. This is a new pattern for me, so very exciting. Thanks for sharing!!
really cute and essentially easy to make. I’ve known how to make friendship bracelets since I was a child, but never the hearts. For the most part the instructions were very easy to understand and the only part that confused me was step eight. You say to put the first string over the second and third but do not mention the fourth string or the fifth string when going th otehr direction. Obviouslly I used common sense and went ahead and notted them, but just thought I would mention that to you. Thanks
Those we are having trouble: try an easier straight or arrowhead style bracelet first until you get the hang of the knots, then this will make waaaay more sense.
You forgot to share how you tie up the 8 strings or how long to make them.
I’m assuming you’re referring to how to finish the piece? You can make one large knot or just leave the strings alone since the entire bracelet is a series of knots (they won’t come undone). You hold the bracelet closed by tying the loose ends through the loop you made at the beginning. As for the length, you work until it fits around your wrist!
If you’re talking about the beginning, she DID address that. You cut the initial pieces to twice the length of your arm.
Seen this and thought of you Alyssa and Katherine
Going to try it, but I’m afraid it might be a bit over my head…instructionwise. If there is a clearer way of explaining, I hope somebody will email me at Dreamwalker46@aol.com….thanks so much. I love the way it looks and would love to make it. I’m definitely going to try, but it’s hard to tell how far I’ll get.
Thanks for the tutorial!

the 9th step said to continue these steps.. but do we continue from step 1?
Hi Rachel! Step 3 is where you create a line between hearts, so technically you would be continuing from there as steps 1 and 2 set you up to make the bracelet. Hope that helps!
I love the heart-patterned friendship bracelets, especially the ones with sequins too.

Not at all!
This is so cute. And I love the colors. I noticed some people were asking for clearer instructions, so I thought I’d suggest creating a pattern like this: http://friendship-bracelets.net/pattern.php?id=5097 that includes the diagram. This is the only way I can make bracelets. I believe that website allows you to create your own patterns/diagrams. This would be so helpful!
The link I posted is quite similar to your pattern but with alternating colors, it seems. I like yours better though
ve tried this twice now, how do you make the hearts so neat? the edges of mine have both come out a bit wonky and the bracelet looks messy
I think maybe the thread is too cheap?
Anyway its such a cute idea, hopefully mine will get better with practice!
Hi Lauren! Try to make your knots as tight and consistent as possible – I find that if I hold the inactive threads taut as I make a knot, I’m able to make it look cleaner. Of course, using good thread helps but I also think practice is key. Good luck and thanks for stopping by!

great picture instructions! i just looked at my cheveron length instructions and followed the bracelet pattern. (my mom onlyprinted the pics!)

how the heck do you end it? it doesnt show… i paused the finished bracelet on the tutorial…how are you able to where it? im confused on how to close it–the end pieces can be tied, but the begining end is too short. HELP! wanna make for daughter’s class for Christmas…
Hi Kelly! The end that you start with should be a loop. To tie both ends together, make a knot out of all the strands once you’ve reached the desired length to finish it. I like to divide the strands at the end in two and then braid each of them so that they’re easy to put on. Hope this helps!
Awwww this is so cute!! I’ll try my best at making this though i got lost at making the side of the heart shape…… Never mind, its school holidays so i have a lot of free time. So wish me luck at making this!!!
Yay!!! I did bout 3/4 then i only thought how do we tie the end…..

When you say first and second string do you mean the two in the middle?
Hi! If you’re referring to the instructions for making knots going right, I mean the two strings you are working with (when you start out, these are the two leftmost strings). Hope that helps!
